Crochet supplies fall into two honest categories: the things that stop your hands hurting, and the things that stop you losing your place. Everything on this page does one or the other.
Hooks — which size range do you need?
Two ranges here, and they do not overlap much:
- An ergonomic crochet hook set covers the everyday sizes with a soft grip on each handle. If you crochet for more than an hour at a stretch, the grip matters more than the hook does — a bare aluminium shaft is what makes your thumb ache.
- Large crochet hooks, 6mm to 20mm, for chunky and super-bulky work — blankets, baskets, rugs, anything worked in roving. A crochet hook for chunky yarn has to be thick enough not to split the plies, and standard sets stop well short of 20mm.
Rule of thumb: go one size up from what the yarn band says if your stitches come out tight, one down if they come out loose. The band is a starting point, not an instruction.
Where do the hooks live?
Loose in a bag is how hooks get lost and bent. A crochet hook case with numbered slots means you reach for a 4mm and find a 4mm. The zip-around organiser here holds hooks and knitting needles together with room for scissors, markers and a tape measure, which is the better buy if you do both crafts.
Markers, and why numbered ones are worth it
Plain crochet stitch markers tell you where. Numbered ones — 0 to 9, locking or leverback, each set with its own storage ring or hoop — tell you where and which. On a raglan increase or a colourwork chart, that difference is the whole point. Clip one at each corner and you can put the piece down for a fortnight and still know what row you were on.
Even stitches without gripping harder
A tension ring guides the yarn over your finger so the drag stays constant. Four are on this page, from an adjustable open-work ring to solid 925 sterling silver. It is the single cheapest fix for a gauge that drifts across a large piece.
Carrying a project
The project bags and yarn bags here hold a work in progress with the hook still in it, and a grommet lets the yarn feed out while the bag stays closed — which is the difference between crocheting on a train and untangling on a train. Yarn bowls and a spinning ball holder are here too, for working at home.
Knit as well? Knitting supplies covers needles and the rest. For storage on its own, see storage and organizers.
