You know the moment. Three double-pointed needles in the sock, a fourth in your hand, a fifth somewhere in the sofa. Or the long cable of a magic loop, pulled through and reset and pulled through again, twice every round.

A 9 inch circular needle does away with both. It is the same size around as the sock, so the stitches simply sit on it and you knit round and round without stopping. No needle to drop. No cable to wrestle. Just the leg growing under your hands while you watch something.

And you get three of them in every pack. One in the project bag, one in the knitting basket, one spare for when the first goes missing down the side of the chair — because they are small, and they do.

What Comes in the Pack

Every single-size option is three complete circular needles in that one size — the count is printed on the packet itself. Each needle is 23 cm (9 inches) end to end, with two tapered tips joined by a flexible steel cable.

  • One size — 3 needles, in whichever size you choose
  • Set 1 — 9 sizes: 2, 2.5, 3, 3.5, 4, 4.5, 5, 5.5 and 6 mm
  • Set 2 — all 13 sizes: 2, 2.25, 2.5, 2.75, 3, 3.25, 3.5, 3.75, 4, 4.5, 5, 5.5 and 6 mm

Every size in a set arrives as its own pack of three, so Set 1 is 27 needles and Set 2 is 39 — the whole range, three deep, in one go.

Why Short Circulars Beat DPNs and Magic Loop for Socks

A 23 cm circular is short enough to go right round a sock leg or a sleeve cuff without any slack. That one fact is what makes the difference:

  • Nothing to drop. One needle instead of four or five loose double-pointed needles.
  • No laddering at the joins. There are no joins — the stitches run continuously round a single cable instead of being split across separate needles.
  • No cable to pull through. Magic loop asks you to stop and reset twice a round. This does not.
  • It fits in a pocket. The whole sock, needle included, goes in a coat pocket or a small project bag.

Fixed, One-Piece, Stainless Steel

These are fixed circular needles. The tips and the cable are one piece — there is no screw connector in the middle to work loose, no join to tighten, and nothing to lose. On a needle this short, where every stitch passes the cable more than once a round, that matters more than it does on a 32 inch circular.

  • Stainless steel tips with a long, gradual taper and a polished finish, so stitches slide rather than drag
  • Braided steel cable rather than nylon — in our product video it is bent into a tight curve by hand and springs straight back
  • All-metal throughout, tip and cable both, with no plastic to soften or discolour
  • Solid stainless steel, not plated — confirmed by our supplier. There is no surface coating to wear through, flake or discolour where your fingers sit

All 13 Sizes, with US Conversions

Sizes run from 2.00 mm to 6.00 mm, which covers everything from fine sock yarn to a chunky hat brim:

  • 2.00 mm — US 0
  • 2.25 mm — US 1
  • 2.50 mm — US 1.5
  • 2.75 mm — US 2
  • 3.00 mm — US 2.5
  • 3.25 mm — US 3
  • 3.50 mm — US 4
  • 3.75 mm — US 5
  • 4.00 mm — US 6
  • 4.50 mm — US 7
  • 5.00 mm — US 8
  • 5.50 mm — US 9
  • 6.00 mm — US 10

Most sock knitters live in the 2.00 to 2.75 mm range for fingering-weight yarn. If you already have a favourite double-pointed size, start there.

What You Can Make

Anything worked in the round at a small circumference:

  • Socks — leg and foot, in one continuous spiral
  • Sleeves and cuffs, without transferring to double-pointed needles at the wrist
  • Hats and beanies, down to the last few rounds before the crown
  • Mittens, gloves and wrist warmers
  • Baby and toddler garments — booties, bonnets, tiny sleeves
  • Small bags, cowls and dog sweaters

How This Compares

Against double-pointed needles. DPNs give you four or five separate sticks to manage and a ladder at every changeover. One short circular gives you a single continuous round and one thing to keep hold of.

Against magic loop on a long circular. Magic loop works, but it asks you to stop, pull the cable through and re-seat the stitches twice every round. A 23 cm circular is already the right circumference, so you never stop.

Against interchangeable mini sets. Interchangeables buy you flexibility, at the cost of a screw join sitting in the middle of a very short needle. These are fixed — fewer parts, nothing to loosen, and a great deal cheaper to try.

On price. Short circulars divide knitters sharply: some never go back, others find the tips too close together for their hands. The usual advice is to buy one and find out before committing to a set. At three needles for the price most shops charge for part of one, finding out costs very little here — and if you already know you get on with them, Set 2 puts all thirteen sizes, three deep, in a drawer for good.

Sizes, Materials and Care

  • Length: 23 cm / 9 inches, tip to tip
  • Sizes: 13, from 2.00 mm (US 0) to 6.00 mm (US 10)
  • Quantity: 3 needles per single-size pack
  • Material: solid stainless steel tips and braided steel cable — unplated
  • Type: fixed circular — not interchangeable
  • Packaging: a resealable poly packet per size, printed with the size and the count

Wipe with a dry cloth if they pick up hand oils. Keep them in their packets or a needle case so the tips stay unmarked — steel points are hard-wearing but a dropped needle can pick up a burr, and on fine yarn you will feel it.

If you react to metal tools or jewellery, the useful detail is that these are unplated. Plating is what wears away on cheaper needles and is the usual cause of a reaction. Stainless steel alloys do contain some nickel in the metal itself, though, so unplated is not the same thing as nickel-free — we would rather tell you that than let you assume it.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are 9 inch circular knitting needles used for?
Knitting small tubes in the round — socks, sleeves, cuffs, hats, mittens and baby garments. The needle is roughly the same circumference as the piece you are making, so the stitches sit on it comfortably with no slack to manage.

Can you knit socks on 9 inch circular needles?
Yes, and it is what most people buy them for. You work the leg and the foot round and round without interruption. Many knitters switch to double-pointed needles or magic loop for the toe decreases, where the stitch count drops below what any circular can hold comfortably.

What size is a 9 inch knitting needle?
Two different numbers are at play. The 9 inch is the total length of the needle, tip to tip. The needle size — the thickness that sets your gauge — is separate, and here it runs from 2.00 mm (US 0) to 6.00 mm (US 10). So a 9 inch circular in US 9 is a 5.5 mm needle that happens to be 9 inches long.

What sizes of circular knitting needles are available?
All 13 in this listing: 2, 2.25, 2.5, 2.75, 3, 3.25, 3.5, 3.75, 4, 4.5, 5, 5.5 and 6 mm. Buy any one on its own as a pack of three, or take Set 1 (9 sizes, 27 needles) or Set 2 (all 13 sizes, 39 needles).

Are these fixed or interchangeable? (asked repeatedly in the knitting groups that rank for this search)
Fixed. The tips are joined permanently to the cable in one piece. True 9 inch interchangeables barely exist, because a screw join takes up room a needle this short does not have — which is why almost every short circular on the market, ours included, is fixed.

Do expensive knitting needles make a difference?
Up to a point, and then it stops. What genuinely matters on a short circular is that the tips taper enough to enter the stitch, the cable is flexible enough to curve without fighting you, and there is no join for the yarn to catch on. Those are properties of how a needle is built, not of what it costs.

How many sizes do I actually need?
Two or three will cover most sock knitting — commonly 2.25 mm and 2.5 mm for fingering-weight yarn, with a 3 mm or 3.5 mm for thicker sock yarn and baby garments. Start with the size you already reach for on your double-pointed needles, and add others as you find you want them.

Will they work for flat knitting?
Yes, for narrow pieces. A 23 cm cable holds roughly the width of a cuff or a small swatch worked back and forth. For a wide flat piece you want a longer circular or straight needles.

A Small Change That Fixes a Familiar Annoyance

Most knitters who try short circulars for socks either adopt them completely or go back to what they know. Three needles in a pack is enough to keep one in every bag you knit from, and cheap enough that finding out which sort of knitter you are costs almost nothing.
