Deep red roses that stand up off the fabric, glossy green leaves, a little satin-stitch heart and rows of flowers. This learn embroidery kit is built around the stitches that make floral embroidery look alive. The three printed practice fabrics carry 29 labelled stitch samples between them.

The first fabric covers the everyday stitches every pattern uses. The second turns them into leaves and stems. The third is where the fun is: raised roses, rolled petals and three-dimensional flowers, the stitches that make people ask how you did that.

The kit comes with everything you need: the printed fabrics, a 20 cm hoop, a pre-sorted thread card for each design, 9 needles, a threader, a seam ripper and small scissors.

What's in the box

  • 3 pre-printed stitch practice fabrics: Beginner Embroidery Stitch 1, 2 and 3
  • 1 embroidery hoop, 20 cm (about 8 in), with a screw-tightened outer ring
  • 3 thread cards, one per design, each pre-sorted in the colours that design uses
  • 1 pack of 9 hand embroidery needles
  • 1 needle threader
  • 1 seam ripper
  • 1 pair of small embroidery scissors
  • 3 illustrated English instruction sheets, one for each design

Choose 1 Kit for one complete set, or 2 Kits for two complete sets.

Parts list for the learn embroidery kit: three printed fabrics, 20 cm hoop, three thread cards, instructions, threader, seam ripper, scissors and needles

The stitches on each fabric

Stitch 1, the essentials: contour stitch, straight stitch, chrysanthemum stitch, running stitch, chain stitch, flower stitch, satin stitch, cross stitch, back stitch, French knot.

Stitch 1 practice fabric with labelled rows: contour, straight, running, chain, satin heart, cross stitch and French knots

Stitch 2, leaves and edges: needlepoint stitch, coral stitch, fly stitch (two versions), bird stitch, feather stitch, leaf stitch, weaving stitch, lock stitch, closed blanket stitch, fishbone stitch.

Stitch 2 practice fabric with green satin leaves, fly stitch, feather stitch, weaving stitch, blanket-stitch flowers and fishbone leaves

Stitch 3, raised and dimensional: three-dimensional stitch, 3D twine stitch, three-dimensional flower, rolling-needle embroidery, long and short stitch, rose stitch (two versions), rolling-needle flowers.

How it works

  • Hoop it. Loosen the screw, lay one fabric over the inner ring, press the outer ring down and tighten until the fabric is drum-firm.
  • Follow the printed guide. Every sample is printed in blue with its stitch name beside it.
  • Stitch with the matching card. Each design has its own thread card, so the colours are already sorted.
  • Rinse when you're done. The blue printed lines wash away with water. Stitch first, then rinse the finished piece so any lines still showing disappear.

If a diagram doesn't click, the stitch name printed on the fabric is all you need to look up a video demonstration of that exact stitch.

Who it's for

  • Beginners who want to learn embroidery with flowers and leaves from the very first stitch
  • Stitchers who know the basics and want to try raised roses and dimensional flowers
  • Gifts for anyone who loves florals and has wanted to learn hand embroidery

How this compares

Against a single floral picture kit: a picture kit uses only the stitches its design needs. This kit teaches the full set behind floral embroidery, from leaves and stems to raised roses, so you can stitch any flower pattern you choose next.

Against a straight-line stitch sampler: classic samplers teach stitches as plain rows. Here the same stitches are worked as petals, leaves and blooms, so you practise them the way you'll use them.

Against buying supplies one by one: hoop, needles, threader, scissors, seam ripper and pre-sorted threads arrive together.

Care and finishing

  • Don't wash the fabric before you stitch. The printed guide lines are water-soluble and would rinse away.
  • After stitching, rinse the piece in water to remove any visible lines, then let it dry flat.
  • Display the finished pieces in the hoop or frame them.

Frequently asked questions

Is embroidery hard for beginners?
No. The first fabric sticks to simple stitches like running, back and chain stitch, and every sample is labelled. By the time you reach the raised roses on the third fabric, you've already practised the stitches they're built from.

What embroidery supplies do I need as a beginner?
Fabric, a hoop, embroidery thread, needles and small scissors, plus a needle threader and a seam ripper. All of these are included here.

How can a beginner start embroidery?
Learn a few stitches on a practice fabric before starting a picture. This kit gives you three practice fabrics that go from the basics to dimensional flowers.

What size is the hoop?
20 cm, about 8 inches across. One hoop is included, and you move it from fabric to fabric.

(The first three questions come from Google's "People also ask" for beginner embroidery kits. The last one is the question buyers ask most about this kit.)
