Soft, bendy silicone in bright candy colours, each piece small enough to vanish into a sewing drawer and made for one job: keeping thread exactly where you left it. These bobbin holders, bobbin clamps and spool huggers stop thread tails unwinding, stop bobbins springing loose, and keep every wound bobbin with the spool it came from.

Open the drawer and every spool is still neatly wound, every bobbin is still full, and the right bobbin is already sitting on top of its matching thread. No tangle to snip away, no guessing between two nearly identical greys, no bobbin rolling under the machine.

Pick the style that fits the way you store thread, or try all three. Each comes in packs of 5, 10 or 20 in a cheerful mix of colours.

Which Style Should You Choose?

  • #1 Bobbin Holders: keep each bobbin with its matching spool. A small peg with a disc and a loop handle. Push the short end through the centre of your wound bobbin and the long end into the hole in the top of the spool, and bobbin and thread become one unit. Choose these if your first question at the machine is "which bobbin goes with this spool?"
  • #2 Bobbin Clamps: stop wound bobbins unwinding. A flexible clip that a bobbin presses into, held by its rims between two prongs, so the thread on it stays put. Choose these for spare and part-used bobbins you keep in a box, tray or pouch.
  • #3 Spool Huggers: stop the spool's thread tail escaping. A stretchy silicone band that wraps around the spool and holds the loose end flat against the thread. Choose these if your thread drawer is a nest of loose tails.

The two work beautifully together: a spool hugger around the spool and a bobbin holder on top, so the tail stays tucked and the matching bobbin rides along. The video at the top of this page shows exactly that pairing.

How Each One Works

Four steps showing a pink silicone bobbin holder pushed through a bobbin and into the top of a thread spool

Bobbin holders. Slide the bobbin onto the short stem until it rests on the disc, then push the long end into the hole in the top of the matching spool. The bobbin now sits on top of its own thread, and the loop handle gives you something to grip when you lift it off to load your machine.

Bobbin clamps. Press a wound bobbin into the clip. The two prongs close over its rims and hold it, so the thread cannot spring off the bobbin in storage. Press it back out when you need it.

Spool huggers. Open the band with your fingers, wrap it around the spool over the thread end, and let go. The silicone closes back around the spool and keeps the tail flat, and it slips off just as easily when you are ready to sew.

Why You'll Love Them

  • Every bobbin stays matched. With the holders, the bobbin you wound for a project is on top of that project's thread, ready to go.
  • No more tails to untangle. Huggers and clamps keep the thread wound on spools and bobbins, so it comes off cleanly when you sew.
  • Colour-code your stash. Use one colour of clamp or hugger per project, per thread weight, or per machine.
  • Gentle and reusable. Soft silicone flexes on and off by hand, again and again.
  • Small and portable. They add almost nothing to a sewing box, travel kit or quilting bag.

How This Compares

Against hard plastic bobbin clips: silicone gives a little as it goes on and off, so there is nothing to force over the rim of a bobbin.

Against bobbin boxes and magnetic bobbin holders: those gather bobbins in one place. These keep the thread on each bobbin wound, and the #1 holders keep every bobbin on its own spool. There are no magnets in any of the three styles.

Against tape and rubber bands: nothing sticky to leave residue on the spool or the thread.

Sizing, Materials & Care

Size chart: bobbin clamp 33 x 20 mm, bobbin holder 40 mm long, spool hugger 20 mm

  • Flexible silicone throughout. Sizes are approximate, from the supplier's size chart shown above.
  • The photos and video show the clamps with both metal and plastic home sewing machine bobbins, and the huggers and holders on everyday sewing thread spools.
  • The holder's long end goes into the hole in the top of the spool, so it suits spools with an open centre, like those shown.
  • Wipe clean with a damp cloth.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you keep bobbins from unraveling?
Put each wound bobbin in a #2 bobbin clamp, which holds it by the rims so the thread stays wound. If the bobbin has a matching spool, a #1 bobbin holder keeps the two together instead.

What is a bobbin holder called?
Names vary: bobbin holders, bobbin buddies, bobbin clips, bobbin clamps and bobbin keepers are all used. In this listing, #1 Bobbin Holders join a bobbin to its spool and #2 Bobbin Clamps hold a single bobbin on its own.

How do you keep bobbins organized?
Keep each bobbin with its thread using #1 bobbin holders, and clip spare bobbins in #2 clamps so they can be stored together without tangling. Different clamp colours make it easy to sort by project.

What is the difference between spool huggers, bobbin clamps and bobbin holders?
Spool huggers wrap the spool and stop its tail unwinding. Bobbin clamps hold a single bobbin so its thread stays wound. Bobbin holders attach a bobbin to the top of its matching spool.

Can I use spool huggers and bobbin holders together?
Yes. Wrap the hugger around the spool, then plug the bobbin holder into the top. The video shows this pairing.

Questions 1 to 3 are real Google "People also ask" questions for bobbin holders and bobbin clips. Questions 4 and 5 come from what AI shopping assistants say buyers weigh up when choosing between these three styles.

Three small silicone helpers, one tidy thread drawer. Choose your style and pack size and keep every thread exactly where you left it.
