A warm wooden handle that sits comfortably in your palm, a brass-coloured collar at the tip, and three metal needles that change the whole character of your work: this wooden punch needle tool set lets you go from fine, delicate loops to thick, plush rug texture without buying a second tool.

Swap in the 2.5 mm needle for embroidery floss and fine yarn, the 3.5 mm for everyday DK and worsted, or the 5 mm for chunky yarn that fills a design fast. Push the yarn through with the long threader, punch, and watch the loops build up on the front of your fabric. It is the kind of tool you pick up for ten minutes and put down an hour later.

Every set comes with the handle, all three needles and a 24 cm threader, so you can start the day it arrives.

What's in the Set

  • 1 wooden handle, 11.3 cm (4.45 in) long, with a brass-coloured collar that holds the needle
  • 3 needles: 5 mm (10 cm / 4 in long), 3.5 mm and 2.5 mm (each 7 cm / 2.7 in long)
  • 1 long threader, 24 cm (9.4 in), long enough to reach through the handle and needle in one pass
  • Instructions

One needle arrives already fitted in the handle, so at first glance you will only see two loose needles in the packet. Unscrew the brass collar and the third one is there.

Choose 1 Set or 2 Sets. Two sets is handy if you share the craft with a friend, or want two needle sizes threaded with different colours at the same time.

Punch needle set sizes: 11.3 cm (4.45 in) handle, 10 cm and 7 cm needles, and 24 cm (9.4 in) threader

Which Needle Size for Which Yarn

Needle diameter is what matters most in punch needle, because the yarn has to slide freely through the hollow needle. Too thick and it drags; too thin and the loops pull back out.

  • 2.5 mm: embroidery floss, fine and sport-weight yarn. Small, detailed designs.
  • 3.5 mm: DK and many worsted yarns. The everyday all-rounder.
  • 5 mm: worsted, bulky and chunky yarn. Thick, plush loops for rugs, cushions and wall hangings.

Test your yarn by pulling it through the needle before you start. If it glides, it's the right size.

How It Works

  1. Unscrew the brass collar, slide in the needle you want, and tighten it again. The video above shows the swap.
  2. Feed the threader up through the needle and handle, catch the yarn, and pull it back through so it runs the full length of the tool.
  3. Pass the yarn through the eye at the tip and leave a short tail.
  4. Stretch your fabric drum-tight in a hoop or frame and punch from the back, keeping the needle eye facing the direction you are travelling. The loops form on the other side.

Who It's For

Complete beginners, people coming back to a craft they loved years ago, and makers who already punch and want a bigger needle for chunky yarn all buy this set. Because it covers three needle sizes, it is a sensible first tool: you can try fine floss work and thick rug yarn before deciding which you enjoy most.

Use it for wall hangings, cushion covers, coasters, small rugs, bag panels and anything else you can stretch in a hoop.

How This Compares

Against a single-size punch needle: one needle suits one range of yarn. Three diameters let you use the yarn you already own, from floss to chunky.

Against a plastic punch needle pen: pens are light and often adjustable, but most have one needle diameter. This set gives you three real diameters and a solid wooden handle that is comfortable for long sessions.

Against buying needles one at a time: one handle, three needles and a threader in one set, so a spare size is always to hand.

Materials and Care

  • Wooden handle, brass-coloured collar, metal needles
  • Wipe the needles clean after use and keep them dry
  • If a needle starts to catch or fray the yarn, check the tip for fibre build-up and try the next size up for that yarn
  • The smallest needle is a snug fit in the collar; ease it in rather than forcing it

Frequently Asked Questions

What does a punch needle tool do?
It pushes yarn through fabric from the back and leaves a loop on the front each time you lift it. Row by row, the loops build up into a soft, textured design, much faster than stitching by hand.

What fabric do I need for punch needle?
An open-weave fabric that grips the loops. Monk's cloth is the usual choice for yarn; burlap and primitive linen also work. Keep it drum-tight in a hoop or frame.

Is punch needle easy to learn?
Yes. Once the needle is threaded, the motion is simply punch, drag a little, punch again. Most beginners finish a small first piece in an afternoon.

Which needle size should I start with?
Start with the 5 mm needle and a bulky or chunky yarn. Bigger loops are forgiving and fill a design quickly, so you see progress straight away.

How do I thread a punch needle?
Push the long threader up through the needle tip until its loop comes out at the top of the handle, hook the yarn into it and pull it back down. Then thread the yarn through the eye at the tip. (Not a "People also ask" question; from the search phrase "how to thread a punch needle tool".)

Can I use it for rugs?
Yes. The 5 mm needle with chunky yarn on rug-weight monk's cloth makes a thick, durable pile for small rugs and mats.

Pick the needle, thread the yarn, and start punching. Everything you need to begin is in the set.

This punch needle is EVERYTHING for the price! Yes, it will look like you only have 2 needles—the third is Inside the barrel, haha 😂
The accompanying wire pulls the yarn through, it’s easy on your hands and The Adjustable sizing for each needle can give you tiny loops for varsity patches or shaggy long ones. BUY this punch, line up your yarns and have FUN!

Overall good punch needle, I did have a small issue with getting the smallest needle into the gold bit as the hole was too small but it was easy to pry open, so no biggie.

Though I haven't used the punch yet, I like the length of the handle and adjustability of the length of needle which were key features for purchasing the product.
