A punch needle kit is the fastest way into textile art: you push a threaded needle through the back of the fabric and a loop stays on the front, so a design that would take days in embroidery fills in over an afternoon. It is forgiving too — pull a loop out, punch it again, and the fabric closes up behind you.

What comes in a kit?

On several of the craft sets and coaster kits the tool is a separate choice marked (optional) — pick that option if you do not already own one, because it is the only part you cannot improvise.

The mistake that ruins a first project

Do not pre-wash the fabric. The pattern is printed on, and it washes straight off with water. Punch first, wash later if you must.

Punch needle or embroidery — which should you choose?

Punch needle covers ground far faster and uses yarn rather than floss, so the finished surface is thick and looped. Embroidery gives finer detail and a flat surface. If you want a picture, stitch it. If you want something soft you can run a hand over, punch it. A DIY punch needle kit is also the more forgiving of the two to learn on, because an unpicked loop leaves no trace.
