Soft cotton Aida cloth with a crisp, even grid of square holes, so every cross lands exactly where your chart says it should. Choose the count, the colour and the size of the piece, and you have a clean blank ready for your own cross stitch pattern.
All four everyday counts are here: big, friendly 11 count squares, the 14 count that most charts are written for, and finer 16 and 18 count for more detail in a smaller space. The colours run from bright white and warm cream to light blue, pink, dark green and a deep black that makes bright floss glow. There is also a gridded white with printed guide lines that does the counting for you.
Pieces start at a 15 x 15 cm square, which is just right for a small hoop, an ornament or a practice motif, and go up to 45 x 45 cm for samplers and big designs. So you can try a new count or colour without buying a large cut you then have to trim down.
What You Get
- One pre-cut piece of plain cotton Aida cloth in the count, colour and size you choose
- Blank cross stitch fabric with no printed design, ready for your own chart
- Fabric only. The pattern, floss, needle and hoop in the photos are there to show the fabric in use
Choose Your Count
The count is the number of squares, and so the number of stitches, in one inch of fabric. A higher count means smaller stitches and a smaller finished design.

- 11 count (about 4 stitches per cm): large, easy-to-see squares for beginners, kids, bold designs and anyone who wants less eye strain
- 14 count (about 5.5 per cm): the all-rounder, and the count most cross stitch patterns recommend
- 16 count (about 6.3 per cm): a little finer, for neater detail
- 18 count (about 7 per cm): fine, detailed work and smaller finished pieces
- Gridded White (14 count): printed guide lines across the fabric make counting and centring easier
Quick sizing: divide your pattern's stitch count by the fabric count to get the finished size in inches. A 100-stitch design is about 9.1 in on 11 count, 7.1 in on 14 count, 6.25 in on 16 count and 5.6 in on 18 count.
Colours by Count

- 11 count: White, Cream
- 14 count: White, Black, Cream, Natural Beige, Light Blue, Dark Green, Pink, Gridded White
- 16 count: White, Light Beige, Black
- 18 count: White, Beige, Black
Light colours make the holes easiest to see, which is why white and cream are the usual first choice. Black and dark green turn bright threads into the star of the piece and suit stitchers who work with good light. Some photos are shared between counts to show the colour, and the count you receive is always the one in your selection.
Sizes and Hoops

- 15 x 15 cm (5.9 x 5.9 in): small designs, ornaments, and 3 to 4 inch hoops
- 30 x 30 cm (11.8 x 11.8 in): medium designs, and hoops up to about 8 inches, including the popular 6 inch hoop
- 35 x 45 cm (13.8 x 17.7 in): close to the common 15 x 18 inch cut, for larger patterns
- 45 x 45 cm (17.7 x 17.7 in): big projects, samplers and large hoops. 14 count Black comes in the first three sizes
Tip: choose a piece about 2 to 3 inches (5 to 8 cm) bigger than your design on every side, or bigger than your hoop, so the hoop can grip it and you have room to frame or finish the piece.
Who It's For
- Cross stitchers who have a pattern and want the right fabric for it
- Beginners and kids learning to cross stitch, on 11 count or Gridded White
- Pattern designers who want to test a chart on a small square first
- Ornament, bookmark and small-hoop makers, on 15 x 15 cm pieces
- Teachers, craft groups and kit makers who need several pieces
How This Compares
Against large pre-cut packs: many shops start at a 15 x 18 inch piece. Here the smallest piece is a 15 x 15 cm square, so a small project, a test stitch or a new colour costs you only the fabric you will use.
Against fabric by the yard: no measuring or cutting a big length before you start. Each piece arrives already squared to size.
Against evenweave and linen: Aida is woven in small blocks with a clear hole at each corner, so you always know where the next stitch goes. That makes it the easiest cross stitch fabric to count on, especially when you are learning or designing your own chart.
Care and Prep
- Edges are cut, not hemmed. Tape them or zig-zag stitch them before you start so they stay neat while you work
- Each piece ships folded. Press it with an iron before stitching to smooth out the fold lines
- Colours may look slightly different on different screens
FAQ
What type of fabric is Aida cloth?
Aida cloth is a cotton fabric woven into small square blocks with a hole at each corner, so cross stitches sit in a neat, countable grid. These pieces are cotton, in 11, 14, 16 and 18 count.
Is 14 or 16 count Aida bigger?
14 count has the bigger squares: 14 stitches fit in an inch, against 16 on 16 count. So the same chart stitches up larger on 14 count and smaller and finer on 16 count.
Can Aida cloth be used for embroidery?
Yes. Aida is made for counted cross stitch, and it also works well for blackwork, backstitch outlines and other counted embroidery stitches that follow the grid.
Should you wash your Aida cloth before cross stitching?
Most stitchers simply press out the fold lines and start. If you plan to wash the finished piece, use cool water and a gentle hand wash, and test a corner of the darker colours first.
What size Aida do I need for a 6 inch hoop? (a common beginner question in AI shopping answers)
The 30 x 30 cm (11.8 in) piece. It leaves about 3 inches of fabric around a 6 inch hoop on every side, which is plenty for the hoop to grip and for finishing.
Pick your count, colour and size, and your next pattern is ready to start.
