An embroidery hoop stand is the difference between stitching for an hour and stitching for an evening. It is not your stitching hand that stops you — it is the other one, holding a hoop steady at the same angle, and your neck bent over it. A stand takes both problems away.

The thing you can only do with a stand

Two-handed stitching. With the hoop held for you, one hand works above the fabric and one below, so the needle is pushed and received rather than pushed and fished for. It roughly doubles stitching speed once it stops feeling strange, and it is the single reason experienced stitchers own one.

Clamp-on or sit-on?

It is about where you stitch, not how well:

  • Clamp-on table stand — clamps to a table or desk edge. The most stable of the three and the best choice if you always work in the same spot.
  • Sit-on lap stand — you sit on the base and the arm rises in front of you, so it needs no table at all. This is the one for an armchair or a sofa.
  • Sit-on lap and table stand, with 360 degree rotation — works both ways if you move between the two, and the head turns a full circle so you can bring a stitch round to your hand instead of turning yourself. Four jointed arms and up to 67 cm of height.

All three are beechwood with adjustable height, so the work comes to your eyes rather than your back going to the work.

Does it work as a cross stitch stand?

Yes — cross stitch is where hands-free helps most, because counted work means constantly looking between chart and fabric, and a stand holds your place while you look away. A cross stitch lap stand and an embroidery stand are the same object.

What size hoop will fit?

These hold a standard round hoop in the usual range. Hoops themselves, in beech from 3 to 12 inches, are in embroidery supplies.
