Collection: Anneaux de tension de fil

A crochet tension ring sits on your index finger and guides the working strand over it, so the yarn leaves your hand at the same angle and the same drag every single stitch. That is all it does, and it is why stitches come out even instead of tightening as you concentrate and loosening as you relax.

How to use a yarn tension ring

Slide it onto the index finger of the hand that holds the yarn — usually the left. Thread the working strand through the loop or coil so it runs from the ball, through the ring, to the hook. Then hold the yarn as you normally would. The ring is not gripping the yarn or replacing your grip; it is holding the strand at a fixed point so your finger no longer has to. Most people find their gauge tightens slightly for the first row and then settles.

Who does it actually help?

Three groups, in order of how much difference it makes:

  • Anyone whose gauge swatch never matches the finished piece. Uneven tension across a long project is the usual cause, and this is the cheapest fix for it.
  • Anyone whose hands ache after an hour. Wrapping yarn around a finger to create drag is what causes the ache. The ring creates the drag instead.
  • Anyone working two or more colours. A ring with separate guides keeps strands from twisting around each other.

Which one should you choose?

All four adjust to fit, so sizing is not the deciding factor:

  • 925 sterling silver — the one to buy if you will wear it every day or give it as a gift. Solid silver, so it does not discolour the way plated metal does.
  • Peacock, cat and web designs — open-worked adjustable metal rings. Same job, considerably less money, and they read as jewellery rather than equipment.

Is a knitting tension ring the same thing?

Same ring, same job. Knitters usually wear it on the finger that carries the yarn in continental style; English-style knitters who throw the yarn get less from it. If you both knit and crochet, one ring covers both.

For tension at the other end, a yarn bowl stops the ball itself fighting you. The rest of the kit is in crochet supplies.
